Welcome to what will be an exciting year in math. We will be exploring new concepts that will build on and extend the learning from last years year of Mastery.

All of the content that is covered in class will be broken down into specific concepts. Students will then be scored on their knowledge level on each of the concepts. Students may earn a 5 – 10 on any particular concept. Each concept will be scored out of ten points. To earn a ten, students must demonstrate a high level of understanding on the assessment. Once a student earns a ten, he or she doesn’t need to complete that concept on future assessments. The table below provides information on what each concept score means in terms of student comprehension. Score Level of Comprehension 10 Advanced Proficient – Student has earned a 9.5 on a particular concept twice, showing that they fully understand the concept and have retained the information. 9.5 Proficient – Student shows strong understanding of the concept. He/she completed the concept once, without any errors. 9 Proficient – Student shows strong understanding of the concept. He/she made a minor error, unrelated to the concept. 8 Partially Proficient - Student shows strong understanding of the concept. He/she made a minor error, related to the concept. 7 Partially Proficient – Student has a fair understanding the concept but made multiple errors related to the concept. 6 Not Proficient – Student a basic understanding of the concept. 5 Not Proficient – Student has not demonstrated any basic understanding of the concept. Students will have the opportunity to receive help on any particular concept that they may be struggling with. Students will also have the ability to improve their scores on particular concepts by re-taking them. A Standards Based Grading model benefits students by not penalizing them for not learning the material at the same pace as other students. Moving forward, since students have an unlimited number of attempts on a particular concept(up until the last week of a term/quarter), I do not allow students to use their binders on assessments. This will allow me to see if they have mastered each concept without the aid of using examples to guide them. As a student re-tests on specific concepts, I will only keep the highest grade they earn, and record it in Skyward. Each concept will be scored out of ten points in Skyward. Standards Based Grading provides a great opportunity for students to celebrate where they end up, as opposed to the process. Because of this, I am less concerned with students learning a concept when I think they should. Instead, I am more interested in students mastering concepts at a pace that is appropriate for their individual needs.
